NHL 95 World Championship
Where: Toronto Waves Egaming
When: Summer 2021
Who: NHL 95 Tribes from across the World from USA, Canada and Finland
THE STORY:
Many kids in the 90’s grew up playing the NHL series on the Sega Genesis (and Super Nintendo) and have fond memories of it.
Leagues in college dorms and one night tourneys sprouted up among friends…..and some of those events are still happening today 25 years later.
The plan is for all of the NHL 95 Tribes to unite for one large Tournament on August 1st in Toronto at Waves Egaming
You have a crew of buds that want to make the pilgrimage?
Send the Commish an Email at nhl95_a_thon@yahoo.com and we can add your to the tribe list.

RULES
1st Table is Rules of each Tribe

---|---|---|---|---|---|
SEGATHON | 5 | ON | OFF | OFF | MANUAL |
MI/BOS | 5 | ON | ON | ON | MANUAL |
FINLAND | 5 | ON | ON | ON | AUTO |
WATERLOO | 5 | OFF | OFF | OFF | MANUAL |
HAI | 5 | OFF | OFF | OFF | AUTO |
UNHOLYGRAIL | 5 | OFF | OFF | OFF | MANUAL |
RIKERS ISLAND | 20 | ON/OFF | OFF | OFF | AUTO |
More Nerdly thoughts on Rules etc.
- PERIODS:
- 5 Minutes are great fast games and keeps the tourney moving. If there is a big mismatch games are over quick. Con is if you get up early there is less time for other player to make a comeback. We do 5 minute periods most of the time but do the Final Four games of the tourney 10 minute periods. Gives players a bit more cushion if down early, but games drag at that point as there really only 1 game going on at a time
- 10 Minutes – gives players more time to get back from being down, but games drag. With line changes ON this may be a bigger factor too. Could also accomplish this with best of 3 series with 5 min periods.
- 20 Minutes: AKA Rikers Island Rules….No friggen way
- Penalties: ON or OFF,
- Penalties ON can be a bit random in the game, but I think they can add some realism to the game. Being able to take a penalty shot and having good players out for serving a penalty adds some fun variables to the game, it also nerfs guys that sit on manual goalie as eventually the computer drones will get called for a penalty..
- Of course Penalties OFF is pretty fun arcade style where you can have Roenick smash guys into boards and get a hat trick.
- GOALIE CONTROL
- AUTO: High scoring games, but basically every break away is a goal.
- MANUAL: Most of the top players use this as it shuts down the “cheater moves” as some say. It’s basically auto goalie if you want, only making you be goalie for penalty shots. Can get a little boring with guys camping, but there is the “DEAD MAN” move.
- LINE CHANGES
- OFF: Don’t have to monkey with lines that much, players don’t loose energy so game is always fast moving. Line Changes OFF seems to be the preferred method of play at nhl 94 tourneys as well
- ON: A different game as you have to actively manage your lines. Endurance is a big factor as some top guys tire slowly. We have never used it so we can keep our tournies larger as most guys that just want to get a few games in don’t want to do anything but mash C Button
- Offsides
- OFF: Games are wide open and go quick without the Drones going offside every other play
- ON: True NHL Hockey, but slows the game down a bit.
CHOOSING TEAMS
- MADISON RULES (1 calls match up other picks which team they want)
- A coin flip will take place. The loser of the coin flip will choose two different teams that will play. The winner of the coin flip picks their team from the two chosen and will play as the Home team. All Star teams are ineligible.
- Can’t call the same match up twice
EVENTS FOR 2020
- SINGLES
- Reg Season Length
- Maybe World Cup Pool Play
- Playoffs Double Elim?
- RYDER CUP TEAM PLAY
- Segathon vs MI/BOS we ranked our top 8 players and then had 1 seed vs 1 seed etc. Could do something like that
- We do a Ryder Cup every year within the factions of our Segathon crew and you can only use each team once.
- DOUBLES
- I have about 10 4 ways so we could add that to the events. I think it’s more fun than singles
